Centennial Teacher Selected to Attend Holy Cross Summer Institute

Montrose, CO. Sixth grade social studies and reading teacher at Centennial Middle School, Amy Jane Priest, has been offered a scholarship from the National Endowment for Humanities to study this July at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The four-week teacher institute entitled “Cultures and Religions of the Himalayan Region,” co-directed by Holy Cross Professor Todd Lewis and Harvard Professor Leonard van der Kuijp,” selects thirty teachers from across the nation to study with a team of core faculty and visiting scholars from around the world.

The institute is an intensive learning experience. In addition to attending films, lectures, discussions on required readings, and cultural events, the institute will include excursions to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Newark Museum, and the Rubin Museum in New York City where teachers will “make connections between the content and classroom applications.” Teachers will be trained in web page design and will also be expected to develop teaching materials, presenting at least three lesson plans at the conclusion of the institute. The NEH award includes a $3000 stipend to cover books, travel, and living expenses.
