Montrose Students Earn Medals at State Competition

Montrose, CO.  At a recent Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), competition in Denver, three students came away with medals of distinction.  T.J. Speck brought home a gold medal in the program “Focus on Children.”  He will now advance to the national competition in July.   Katie Hinshaw earned a bronze medal and Catie Jekel a silver medal in the “Job Interview” competition.

The state FCCLA competition was held at the Denver Marriott Tech Center.  Students competed in STAR a eve, which stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition.  According to club sponsor, Leila Koenig, “For the Job Interview competition, students prepare a portfolio for a job that they are qualified to do, and at this competition, they fill out an application, then interview before a panel of judges. The Focus on Children competition required that a student complete a service project that has positive impact on children, families, and the community.

The Montrose High School Chapter of FCCLA sponsored a “Children’s Party” on December 8th for the children of MHS faculty.  This event provided the teachers with an evening off to relax, do some shopping, or go out to dinner.  T.J. Speck was the Santa who came to visit that evening, and for this competition, he prepared a display and a speech about the service project, and the positive impact it had on the children.  He competed in his Santa suit.

Congratulations to these students and to their sponsor, Leila Koenig.
