Mark Corey Receives CASB McGuffey Award

Montrose, Colorado. Mark Corey,  Montrose County School District Re-1J school board member, representing District A has been named a 2006 McGuffey Award winner.

According to Nancy Fishering, school board president, “Mr. Corey’s district includes the small community of Olathe, and the surrounding agricultural families. Mark is a farmer/rancher and his schedule is often marked by 16 hour days.  In spite of that schedule, Mark has made it a priority to attend our school board meetings.  Mark’s contributions to our board meetings are always respectful, thoughtful, and well-developed.  He has succeeded in public outreach within his farming community, which is undergoing the pressures of rapid growth and change. He has been an outstanding advocate for the children in our rural schools.   He works well with fellow board members, and has demonstrated self-improvement and growth in his boardmanship. “

First published in 1836, the McGuffey Readers rode the wave of western expansion. After the Civil War they were standard schoolbooks in 37 states. The McGuffey Readers were a series of seven books with stories and poems that not only taught kids reading and grammar, but also helped them to develop good qualities. It was one of the most widely used and influential textbooks of its time in transferring not only knowledge, but also certain virtues required to fulfill the responsibilities of citizenship in a free society. The CASB McGuffey Award has been designed to honor that unique board member who brings to his/her board work both the head and the heart of committed and passionate service.
