For your Info

Reading on the Go began last week. As a second grade we mix up the students to work on phonics skills. This means students leave my room for 45 minutes for phonics instruction. This occurs Monday-Wednesday and Friday. These groups are flexible. This grouping happens first thing so it is important for students to be on time to school. The spelling list will come out of these groups and will be focused on phonics being discussed in group.

I Can Read started last week with great ease. Thank you for all who helped. Our class I Can Read day is Wednesdays from now on.

Reading

Reading Strategies Focus- using the strategies: Questions, predictions, monitor/clarify, decode, summarize and evaluate before, during and after reading.

Comprehension Skill – Compare and contrast

Word Work- we are developing vocabulary word banks. Our words this week are: details, perfect, layer, steep, cozy, creative and gallery.

The focus with these words will be, understanding what they mean and using them in our talking. Encourage your student to use these words in a sentence and ask them what each word means.

We will also have five words highlighted for the Word Wall. These words will be words that are high frequency words in writing. Our focus will be learning how to write them and use them in our writing. Our word wall words are: school, saw, more, were, and friends

As always we will be reading for fluency (accuracy, intonation, and speed).

Language Arts

We are writing about yourselves and others. We are also editing sentences.

Mathematics

This week we will wrap up unit one. We will be exploring thermometers, Base ten blocks and dominoes. I will be also assessing this week. The assessment will be one on one with me. This is just to give me a better picture of what I need to teach.

Science-Social Studies

This week we will look at how plants affect our lives and move into learning about soil and rocks.

We will continue to work with maps. We begin learning about Johnny Appleseed and Columbus
