Ms. Hickman's Class

The Writing Workshop

In our writing workshop, we have many opportunities to practice writing skills in a meaningful way.  During workshop time, our classroom is transformed into a news studio, with Ms. Hickman as the managing editor and students as writers, editors and publishers.  After proposing ideas for news stories and writing what we know about the topic, we decide on resources that can fill in the holes in our stories.  We interview people and conduct research to gather the facts we need to finish our writing.  After we've put our story together, we can either create a PowerPoint or tape our story "in the field" or at the news desk in our studio.  News stories that are videotaped are downloaded and edited by students on the computer.  We will also be publishing our stories to this website, so check back!

Our class has started recording a news broadcast for the Montrose Daily Press about every two weeks.  This broadcast contains news stories written by Northside fifth graders about news happening in our school.  Our thanks goes out to the Daily Press and to Joel Blocker for their support of our news writing program.
